Queen Scallops are present in waters around the
South Island of New Zealand. Most abundant stocks are from South
Canterbury to Stewart Island. Occurs from as shallow as 20m out
to at least 400m, but most common in 100-150m. This specie is
similar to European Queen Scallop.
Shell reaches the size of 6-8cm across and edible meat is reasonable
size. New Zealand Queen Scallop shell is very attractive ranging
in colour from delicate peach, through yellow to red.
Ngai Tahu harvests and processes this specie into a variety
of forms including: meat and roe with mantle on or off, crumbed
meat or whole in shell.
